'Gurudeva' marks the debut of B. Jaffer as director with Sri Selva Muthu Kumara Movies Pvt. Ltd. B.Jaffer has also written the story, screenplay and dialogue. This is a cocktail of love, hate and kinship with an ample dose of music, dance and stunts thrown in, like in so many other films, could have made some impact if more thought had been given to treatment.
Story:
"Gurudeva" is the usual tale of the rich, modern girl and the poor, uncultured bumpkin coming together, falling apart and teaming up yet again.
Guru (Jai Akash) is a ruffian, uneducated and alone. Always surrounded by friends, a bunch of jokers, he is more of an underworld don. Mari (Nasser), his mentor, advises him to fall in love. And when he does just that his life takes a turn for the worse. Deva (Pranathi), the girl he flips for, uses him to settle scores with her lawyer and get her wealth back, after which she spurns him. The reason she gives for enticing him with the promise of love is not convincing enough. The besotted lover that he is, Guru commits a murder for her sake and is thrown behind bars for three years. When he comes out if you think he has some ingenious plan to teach Deva a lesson, sorry, no such sensible move on his part. The story that falls flat at this point makes no effort to rise till the end.
Performance:
Akash looks too suave and sophisticated to pass off as a thug. Pranathi's movements show an obvious disinterest in dance. It is so with the make-up too. Nasser offers some light moments and is touching in the sequence where he pleads with Deva to help get Guru out of jail. Dhamu's performance is predictable always trying to highlight his mimicking skills.
Music: Music by Sahesh Murali is loud and lacks melody.
Verdict: Below Average.
