Zubeidaa (Karisma Kapoor) wants to live life on her
own terms. With a passion for the performing arts, Zubeidaa
is not allowed to enter filmdom, despite her father
being a film producer. She is married off forcefully
to her dad's friend's son and begets a child. But, since
her in-laws want to live in Karachi, Pakistan, they
are forced to separate.
Zubeidaa leads a boring existence, until her father's
friend, Rose, a film actress, introduces her to Victor,
an aristocrat played by Manoj Bajpai. The two fall in
love and Zubeidaa becomes second wife to Victor, the
first one being the dignified and graceful Mandira Devi
(Rekha). Zubeidaa is forced to leave her child behind
though who is raised by her mother, (Rege). The child
grows up to be a film journalist played by, Rajit Kapoor(well
known Bengali actor), who traces his mother's life.
'Zubeidaa' is essentially, the elusive, mysterious mother's
story as traced by son.
Grand and colourful, this one is bigger than any of
SB's other films. All of you who have not seen any of
his films earlier may as well take a peek at this one,
for critics could well term it as a treading the middle
path kind of film. The music of the film by Rahman is
a highlight. With no item numbers, the songs add value
to the film. 'Dheeme Dheeme' is a melody that one can
sing along with while the theme song, 'So Gaye' is haunting.
Colourful picturisations at great locations are a treat.
Karisma Kapoor performs well in the title role. Manoj
Bajpai gels into his character perfectly. Rekha looks
good in a small but significant role that has her play
a dignified, graceful character as opposed to the impetuous
Zubeidaa.
